DeepForest is a land management and research organization based in Murphys, California in the heart of the Sierra Nevada foothills. We combine ecological science and advanced technology to shape the forests of tomorrow. Forests play a vital role in local communities and the global fight against climate change. Our work restores native ecology in damaged areas, adapts forests for climate change and wildfire risks, and leverages forests as a tool to capture and permanently sequester atmospheric carbon. We take a collaborative, open science approach to practicing, promoting, and partnering to develop scalable technology solutions for the next generation of forest management.
Areas of work
Forests as carbon technology
Capturing and storing atmospheric carbon via managed forest lifecycles
Capturing and storing atmospheric carbon via managed forest lifecycles
Open science and reproducible forestry
Documenting and sharing interventions, results, and technology solutions as we work
Biochar for carbon storage
Improving practices to convert excess woody debris into biochar—a stable form of carbon that enhances soil and stores carbon for centuries.
Restoring ecological function
Recover ecological services lost due to fires and historic practices

Native forest enhancement
Replant native species and shape growth using site-specific data.
Partnering with tech startups
Collaborations to field test and co-develop tools for real-world forest challenges.

Wildfire risk reduction
Plan and execute a mix of fuel load reduction interventions to reduce fire risk and develop efficient approaches.
Ecosystem Revival
Managing creek water flow, meadow grasses, and riparian ecology for year-round resilience and sustaining cycles.

Our Project Sites
Woodland Hilltop Arbory
22 acres of hilltop woodlands next to the historic downtown of Murphys, CA . This hilltop was clear cut and mined for gold during the gold rush era, with collapsed tunnels and mining ditches still visible. We are actively restoring a healthy forest mix after 100+ years of inattention to the land
San Domingo Creek Arbory
Situated along San Domingo creek, this site is over 450 acres of mixed forest, grazing meadows, and flowing water in a beautiful valley. Miwok grinding stones indicate ancient usage of the site prior to a Gold Rush era homestead and ranch. We have a range of projects to support the many facets of this ecosystem.
